Smothering Magnetism

The Smothering Magnetism series has taken several forms, all focused on my body.

Beginning with Smother, presenting myself without cover while intimately performing for the viewer, This work maintains emotional vulnerability alongside the strength required to confront those who see me as a spectacle. Often intending to present a conflict through disguise or visual confrontation, I explore the act of seeing; specifically, the relationship between observer and observed. intermittently focusing on the moment of looking and the time-based gaze, I search for space I can metaphorically occupy with comfort.

Digging introspectively to discover why self-portraiture became a main mode of working, Smother evolved into the Magnetism series. This autobiographical exploration of how I fit into the world displays my physical size as the greatest inhibitor to a secure sense of belonging and a barrier to emotional intimacy. The work reveals the degrees to which I alter myself and my actions to both literally and metaphorically fit within perceived ideals
